If I ask the question, what comes to mind when you think “What is living in Paris really like?” What would some of your answers be? Is it anything close to what you see on “Emily in Paris?” Would one of those answers be… waking up to the sounds of La Vie en Rose playing in the streets of your neighborhood? Or perhaps, unknowingly dining next to and conversating with a Royal Prince? Eating fresh, warm croissants and sipping cafe au laits on the terrace of your 5th story apt? Maybe it’s going on dates that end with you sitting on the steps of the Trocadéro with a clear view of Eiffel sparkling in front of you? Sounds unrealistic right?? Hardly, as I am living proof that that is exactly what living in Paris is like… well, my experience at least.

All my life I have had this dream of wanting to live and work in Paris and experience day to day life as a local there and this last summer, I did just that.

After being assigned a special project for work, I did some traveling through Europe and ended my stay with over a month in Paris.

I was lucky to find the perfect apt to rent on Rue Jean Peirre Timbaud which is just about a 20 min subway ride from the Eiffel Tower.  It was love at first site from the second I walked into it as it came with a small terrace that I often would sit and do work from.  This area was perfect for me as it wasn’t close to any of the major tourist attractions but close enough to get to any within a short subway ride.

A couple of things that worked in my favor were having a elevator and A/C unit in my apt, unlike Emily in Paris.  The rest however was pretty spot on!

Although my words could never really convey the feeling of my experience, I’m going to try to sum up the best parts and must do’s if you find yourself booking a trip there soon.

Let’s start with food! I traveled through Italy prior to reaching Paris and I’m about to make a statement that many may not agree with, but… in my opinion, the food in Paris blew away any of the food that I had in Italy, (I said what I said lol.) I did a ton of research before going and all of that proved to be worth while as I loved it all.

Settling one debate right off the bat… Carette or Angelina?? My vote is Carette! I know the hot chocolate is to die for at both places but I preferred Carrette because the entire menu there is good. And the hot chocolate is slightly thinner which makes it easier to keep down.  I was only able to take 2 sips at Angelina since it was too thick :/ Tip:  try to go in the morning so you can enjoy a fresh croissant with it, esp for dunking 😉

Since I would be busy with work throughout the week, I saved the weekends for very special dinners and nights out (cute outfits and all!) I did have a kitchen in my apartment which I would cook in every once in a while but being in Paris, how could you not take advantage of the restaurants? I made sure to eat at so many places located in all the different arrondissements.  My top places to eat in no particular order are:

• Gigi (try to get a table outside as the view of Eiffel is beautiful)

• Coco (the best roast chicken I’ve ever had) – I went on a Friday night and noticed that couples would dance the night away on the steps of the opera house right around the corner.  Such a magical experience.

• Giraffe (very well know for being located in the TrocadĂŠro with an unbelievable view of the Eiffel Tower) – Hard to get reservations so be sure to book well in advance.

• Pink mamma or Ober Mamma – the truffle pasta and beef carpaccio at either was chef’s kiss.

• Le CafĂŠ Marly (Located at the Louvre) this place is perfect for lunch after visiting the museum.  If you have a whole day free, I would suggest going to the park and Ferris wheel too.  Maybe even playing some games in the amusement area.  All just steps in front of Louvre.

• MUN – located on champs elyesee (sushi and rock shrimp) were dee-lish!

• L’Avenue – touristy spot for sure but a must if you’ve spent the day shopping on Champs-ÉlysĂŠes.

• Le Beef Marais had the best steak/frites I’ve ever had.  Be sure to try a couple of different dipping sauces when you go.

You may not be able to go to all of them but even a few will be well worth it.

What is there to do in Paris?!  The list is endless!!  I found myself wandering around, discovering new things everyday.  There’s the typical tourist attractions and then there’s the random stuff, like the Picasso museum on a weekday afternoon, or a sandwich and pastry picnic down by the seine.  I mostly would get around by Subway but would never hesitate to hop on a bike or vespa when possible.  Be very careful doing this though as riding on the roads there is nothing like it is here.  I may or may not have cheated death a few times while there lol.

Something else I would suggest doing if you go in summer time is,  sitting on the back ground area of Eiffel with a blanket and good book or some art supplies to paint with.

Here’s a list of other must do things to check off your list that may not seem typical.

• Go to the DIOR Exhibit at La Galerie Dior. (Be sure to end your tour with a lattè at the cafè upstairs.)

• Dinner cruise on the seine.

• A day at Versailles including a tour of the back grounds and access to the hall of mirrors.   A fun tip: *make reservations at the cafe for breakfast (with ticket purchase) and someone will walk you into Versailles and allow you to skip the long line after you’re done eating.  I saved doing this on the day of my birthday and every part of the experience was wonderful!

• A day at the Louvre museum (suggested above with one of my fave lunch spots.)

• A day trip to Montmarte.  This little town was the cutest and I wish I would have spent more time there.  I took a TukTuk ride there which was so so much fun but it didn’t give a ton of time to walk around much.  P.S. Montmarte was heavily featured in this new season of Emily in Paris ;))

• Visit 31 Rue Cambon Chanel.  This was the first ever Chanel boutique.  Coco actually lived in an apt above it and you can take pics on the infamous stairs leading up to it.

• High tea at the Ritz in Paris (it’s a little costly but worth it.). This is the same hotel that Princess Diana was last staying in before her tragic death.)

• A quick stop in Latin Quarters, especially at night.

• Rent a Vespa, and take rides around the Arc de Triomphe and down Champs-Élysées.

• If you’re into Burlesque, then I would suggest a show at Crazy Horse.  I’m not really a fan of Moulin Rouge but the Crazy Horse shows are really tastefully done.

• Vintage boutique shopping, cruising Champs-Élysées or a trip to Galeries Lafayette. A quick TikTok search will give you info on the best vintage shops to go to! (Note* -Be sure to stop in KITH for either a drink in the cafe or and sweet treat at the ice cream bar.)

• Brunch at Plaza Athenee.  Again, pricy but so worth it!

• Check out cathĂŠdrale Notre-Dame de Paris (if it’s open.)

• I didn’t go to any clubs while there because I was by myself but I know Paris has some of the best speak easy’s in the world.  Do some research before you go.

• Check the internet for any pop ups! They are always changing.

People have this misconception that the French hate Americans but my experience was nothing of the sort.  I dined and went everywhere by myself.  I never once worried about feeling lonely or people judging me.  I would always have people strike up a conversation with me while sitting next to me (hence, how it is that I met the prince of Morocco and his friends!)  Ladies… Be aware though…. French men will never simply take no for an answer if you’re not interested, haha. You can say you are married, widowed, gay or whatever else and they will still find ways to pursue you.  True romantics at heart I tell you lol!

So I started this article by talking about some of the unrealistic things that people don’t believe Paris is truly like.  Let’s talk about it.  For those of you that follow my blog and were able to view my stories in real time or get on my live streams, you saw firsthand some of the most beautiful experiences I went through while living there.  For those that didn’t, please be sure to click on my highlights when you’re on my page next.

I am someone that truly believes that every one of us has the ability to create whatever kind of magic they want in their lives.  You just have to be willing to do what it takes even if that means traveling by yourself.

While I was in Paris, I didn’t feel any need to watch TV or sit on my couch and be non productive in any way. I felt more zest for live than you can ever imagine. I would often get on Birds and Bikes and literally just explore all day! Funny how being in different parts of the world can absolutely determine what type of lifestyle you live.

I hope this guide helps you experience the most beautiful city on earth in as magical of a way as I was able to!

Metro Detroit fashion influencer Asima Khan heads to NYC Fall Fashion Week and reports back on her favorite trends.

By Asima Khan (SEEN MAGAZINE CONTRIBUTOR)

Last week, from February 11 – 16, the fashion world descended upon NYC for Fall Fashion week 2022. I was lucky to be able to attend a few shows and although things aren’t completely back to normal as pre-pandemic, we’ve reached some light at the end of the tunnel. Many designers were back on track with physical shows and they did not disappoint!

Feathers galore, heavy sequins, loose knits, beading and cutouts are what’s in store for our next season of trends. Out of all the shows, my absolute favorites were Patbo, Bronx and Banco, Son Jung Wan and L’Agence. They all heavily displayed a mix of textures alongside exaggerated hems and over the top looks.

I absolutely love the direction the fashion world is headed in.  Metallic boots with embellished skirts, topped with a heavy knit will surely be a staple this Fall/Winter.

There used to be an era when sparkle was meant just for special occasions but that rule has clearly been thrown out the window as pops of sequins and shine can be incorporated into everyday wear.

Here are a few of my favorite looks:

Now, what would fashion week be without seeing what’s on the streets? Fashion week not only has to do with what’s to come, but also with what is current. Color blocking, fringe detailing and oversized loose garments are still all the rage.

Here is a look at a few of the outfits I wore throughout the week. I tend to play it a little safe when it comes to fashion week but will be stepping out of that box for future events as I am so inspired by the newest runway designs.

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ

Assalamu alaikum everyone.

On behalf of my entire family, I would like to start by thanking each and every one of you for coming here today to pay your respects to my beloved father, Falah Uddin Khan.

A few months back, once I started to sense that his time here with us may be limited, I starting writing. Nothing in particular. Just a journal with notes on different pieces of his life. Mostly things that made me feel happy or reminded me of all of his insanely wonderful qualities.

Over the past few days as I witnessed his health rapidly decline, I somehow managed to put my words into a eulogy to express to you all who and what my father was to this world.

Please bare with me as I will do my best to compose myself…

What Allah gave us…

On December 6th 1943, Allah gave us Falah Uddin Khan, born in Ludhiana India, son of Aziz Uddin Khan and Amtul Aziz.

Second of his siblings, he proved to be a brother that dreams were made of. Although a few have now passed, the ones that are here today would do nothing but agree with me… Shams Uddin, Nasreen, Salah Uddin, Tasneem, Saeed, Shaheen, and his youngest Naveed. Please know that the love he had for each of you was unparalleled. It was shown to each of you not just through his words, but also through the mountains he moved anytime you ever needed him.

His love and support was equally extended to all of your spouses as well, Nazi, Farrah, Shafiq, Saima, Fahim and Faiza.

Starting work at a young age, Allah directed him into the field of electrical engineering which is a career he would continue to pursue once he immigrated to the US in 1976.

While in his late 20’s, he was introduced to and ultimately betrothed to his beloved “Baby.” Baby being her nickname given by her family at birth, not just something cute he called her as a term of endearment, although now it became his sweet calling of her.

My parents truthfully had an arranged marriage and here’s a fun fact actually; my mom once saw my dad at the bus stop and asked her friend “why does that guy look so familiar?!” To which her friend responded… umm, that’s your fiancé (lol!) but that’s just how things went back home in those days.

But, Allah turned this union into one of the greatest loves I’ve ever witnessed in my entire life. He wed his “Baby” in 1973 and about a year later they expected their first child. This child however was not meant to be with them in this life as he was delivered full term stillborn. As my dad valued the human life so much, he gave him a proper burial even though the child never took a single breath.

A year and a half later…

Allah then gave us Neman Ahmed Khan. Falah’s oldest and oh so special son. Special not only because he was their first (living) child but special also because he was the first grandson to carry the Khan name. Dad would tell us all the time that the sound of Nomi’s cry when he first entered the world was the absolute sweetest sound he ever heard in all his life. The apple of his eye, his pride and joy, I will never have enough words to describe his love for his Nomo.

Just 2 months after Neman was born, my parents made the difficult transition to move to the U.S. from Pakistan in 1976. My father didn’t wait so much as 24 hours after stepping foot in this country to go to work and start his career as an electrical engineer at the company ED&C.

He was so fortunate to have the support of his sister in law Hafiz along with her husband Audil to make this move as easy as possible. He would ALWAYS tell us that those two are the reason he made it here and was able to build such a wonderful life for us.

Then 5 years down the road, came his daughter Asima Noreen. Dad being the one to choose my name and also being the first one to feed me honey, ensured that we’d be more than soulmates all his life. Not only did he have a mini version of himself that looked just like him, but also one that would inherit so many of his traits.

From fashion to food to photography, I couldn’t be happier to have followed in your exact footsteps.

Because what Allah gave us was a fashion icon of his time. A man who dressed so impeccably no matter what the occasion was. The way he dressed and carried himself is still something every single person that knew him talks about. With special attention to his suave hairspray and his safari cologne.

His love of photography and capturing real time moments allowed us to relive our childhood with him over and over again.

As a jack of all trades, he had so many talents and so many interests, it would honestly take me days to go over all of them, so today, I’ll just talk about a few:

⁃ He was a self taught handyman. He could literally fix anything using random things he’d just find around the house.

⁃ A master chef, who’s specialty was bbq. If you ever had the privilege of eating his tikkas then you knew they were nothing short of life changing.

⁃ A gracious and most hospitable host, he always wanted people over his house and would find so many excuses for them not to leave.

⁃ He also had such a green thumb as gardening was one of his greatest passions.

⁃ He was Baby’s hairdresser and groomer as she only ever liked the way he did her hair.

⁃ He was an inventor (many contraptions were always displayed around the house.)

⁃ He was a doctor at times / and a healer.

⁃ A therapist (both physical and mental.)

⁃ A wanderlust who loved to travel. So many road trips come to mind that he took us on in our burgundy station wagon.

Nomi and I couldn’t have been more blessed to learn even an ounce of these things from you.

Our life growing up was that out of a storybook. When I was 5, we moved just one street away from our beloved cousins/siblings, Halima Sadia, Sabahat, Bilal, and Meriam. These are the children of his sister Tasneem (who really was his sidekick throughout life) and his brother in law Shafiq Mirza who is my moms brother. Yes, it was a cross marriage.

There were some extremely hard times that were endured because of this situation but dad made everything better at all times for us. He was the calm, the logic, the solution to every bad situation to ever come our way.

You 4 were his children. Period. And as you grew up to find love and bring your wonderful spouses into his life, Shakeel, Dory, Aisha and Aniq, they too were his kids more than ever being just his nieces and nephews.

Neman found and married the love of his life, Hadia, in 2005.

A few years after they were married, Allah gave dad his continued legacy, Ayaan Yousif Khan and then 2 years later came his Aanya Merheen Khan. Mixed with all of the other children from all of those he saw as his kids, his life was full of love and laughter.

Hadia, know that you were so special to him. He saw you as so much more than just a daughter in law. He saw you as one of his closest friends. Someone he could talk to for hours just about anything.

The greatest gift I am so happy that at least one of us was able to give to him was the honor of making him a grandpa.

Ayaan and Aanya, know that Grandpa will always be with you in everything you do. He will be right there to witness all of the wonderful things we know you’ll accomplish. Each of you enriched his life so much and gave him nothing short of what a grandparent could be blessed with.

This goes for all his other precious kiddos, Sonia, Sabrina, Danial, Eyal, Ibrahim, Yaqub, Emaan, and his newest love Armaan who gave him so many smiles these last few months of his life.

P.S. Ayaan, your Honda is waiting for you the second you are old enough to drive. 😉

As I don’t have hours to list every single person he so wonderfully loved, you all know who you are and what joy you brought to his life. Some of you helped him so much at the most difficult times when he just didn’t have the strength to do all the things he loved.

Popi, you are without a doubt one of those people. You were his son more than just his little brother in law. Thank you for being there to help everyone in his place now. He did his best to help you as much as he could with his mother in law that he so dearly loved but never had to worry as he knew you always had things handled.

Asad my dearest brother, I wish I could put into words how much your khalu loved you and wished that he could have spent more time with Arshaan.

This love goes for the rest of you as well. Anser, ALL of bhardi Khalas kids, their spouses and their kids, Shams Thai Abbus daughters, spouses and kids, Ali and Zenab, Harris and Nabeel, Osmaan, Umer, Hina, Hira, Saira, and many many more spread throughout the world.

Ali, your help towards the end of his life is something we will be forever grateful for. Please know that.

If I’ve left anyone out, it was not my intention rather the undeniable fact that he had an army of loved ones. He was the most respected and admired person to walk among us. And if you had the privilege of knowing him or being connected to him in any way, please take a moment to think of a fond memory as I’m sure you have an abundance of them to choose from.

Dad, You embraced every role you were given by God from being the best son, to the best brother, the best husband, best father, best grandfather, best uncle, best friend and an exemplary Muslim who even completed Hajj and Umrah.

Lastly I want to share with you all what Allah gave me…

Allah gave me… TIME. He gave me 40 years of such a beautiful life spent with you.

A life where we experienced so many wonderful things together.

You taught me to love whole heartedly no matter what. Even if that love for some reason wasn’t reciprocated back by someone.

You were my:

Angel.

My Support system.

My Rock.

My Foundation.

My Superhero &

My Soul mate.

Please know that being your caretaker was the most extraordinary role of my life. And I would do it 100 times over if I had to again.

Nomi and I are honored to be your children and we will continue to make you proud. I promise.

We also promise that we will do everything in our power to take care of mom just as wonderfully as you did.

The image of your cute pudgy fingers hitting the keyboard as you scroll FB and dial numbers on your phone will be imbedded in my mind forever.

Daddy, I did my best to look as nice as possible for you today as I knew, seeing me dressed up was one of your greatest joys.

Know that you transferred your strength and your courage to me in every form which is the only reason why I was able to carry out your every last wish.

Laying next to you with your hand in mine with my head on your chest, listening your very last heart beat and saying everything my heart needed to say to let you go as you took your last breath with all of your loved ones around you is a gift from God that I will never be able to pay him back for.

I love you my sweet angelic father…

Allah Hafiz Meri Jaan, Allah de Sapurth, Allah nigehban.

Allah de HavalĂŠ.

Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un 🤲🏼

I couldn’t think of a better way to wish you a Happy 40th Birthday than to walk you through our incredible life together. I hope that each one of these pics reminds you of all the different places, things and situations we’ve experienced together. From age 12 to 40, what a blessing it has been to have a friendship like ours. Love you to the moon and back, forever and always ♥️

p.s. Pic #1 is our very first pic together. We were 13 and going on a field trip to xochimilco for Spanish class 🤣🤣

The Shows

Monday

This was a packed day: Three runway shows, a cocktail party and a late-night dinner. Our first show was the Luooif Studio Fall/Winter 2020 Runway show held at Spring Studios. I loved the mix of textures and prints in this collection so much!  A flared silhouette was an important element of the show, as well as lots of metallic shine.

Next was the CAAFD Emerging Designers show at Pier 59. Fun fact: It has been a dream of mine to go to a show at Pier 59 ever since I first watched The Devil Wears Prada! This runway show consisted of three different designers — Sania Maskatiya, Yufesh and Ruth Zabetta.  All three were completely different from one another.  Sania Maskatiya was an ivory dream: robes, dusters and layers in a sleek white palette covered the runway so beautifully.  Yufesh was mixed with both men’s and women’s fashion, and metallics were the star of the show.  Ruth Zabetta displayed more of a toffee/chocolate palette, complete with some fabulous hats and head pieces.

The last show of the day had the coolest vibe, in my opinion. It was the Randi Rahm Atelier show at Public Hotel on the Lower East Side. I had heard a lot about this designer after seeing her garments on celebrities like Billy Porter and “Bachelorette” Hannah Brown. The diversity in this show was on another level!! From the models to each individual piece displayed, it was incredibly inclusive. Randi’s collection included more evening wear so it was easy to see some of these looks ending up on the red carpet. Loved seeing so much variety and overall love.

Tuesday

Tuesday consisted of only one show, the Taoray Wang Autumn Winter 2020 Runway Show.  I have to say, this was my favorite show above all! Taoray’s collection consisted of the most beautifully draped clothing with cascading layers and large bows tying many of the garments together. If you know me or my fashion taste at all, you will see why I admire this designer so much.  The color palette stretched from blue-grays to pastel pinks and metallics, all mixed with contrast colors for the perfect tie in.  Loved the entire collection!

Street Style

Fashion week is not just about what’s on the runways. The street-style fashion is one of the most important elements of the whole occasion.  I could sit in front of Spring Studios all day and just take in all the fashion displayed by creative bloggers, influencers and the general public. Creativity at its finest. What I love about fashion more than anything is its various forms. Interestingly enough, it seems like the Coronavirus played a big part in a lot of the fashion on and off the runways, as many people were seen wearing decorative masks.  Color blocking was at an all-time high and oversized coats and blazers were all the rage.  Also, head to toe leather was seen quite a bit.

My looks

Figuring out my own outfits is the most difficult part of fashion week. Looks for fashion week have to do with so much more than putting some pieces together; you are expected to display current season trends while pairing accessories that are in style, all while trying to stay warm. Every detail requires attention, from your shoes to your bags to sunnies and beyond. Here’s a look at my NYFW 2020 style.

Styling, designing, blogging — Asima does it all in the name of fashion! After working in luxury retail for most of her life, including most recently for Chanel, Asima is sharing her style chops with the world through her blog, asimakemymark.com. From what to wear, how to wear it and where to wear it to, Asima shares her fusion of high-low OOTD’s on her Instagram @asimakemymark.

Rooftop vibes, great music and a fun group of people ready to dance the day away, made for the perfect kick off to my Instaworld, “series 1” event!  When first coming up with the concept for this event, I had it in my mind to create an atmosphere that included everything “Instagrammable!”  From cute photo props, to deliciously displayed food, to fashion forward fits!   I was lucky to have the support of one of the newest and hottest spots in the Detroit this summer when it came to the location which couldn’t have been a more perfect setting.  Being that Delmar just opened this summer, having the opportunity to host the first day party there was a chance I was not going to pass on, regardless of what limitations I had set before me.  Lets be real guys… planning anything of this magnitude in just 2 short weeks is no easy work.   There are a million details that have to be ironed out and not a single area that can be overlooked.  But, to know me is to know I love a challenge, so I went for it!  Although we had some stressful curves due to the weather, I honestly couldn’t have asked for a better turn out. To all of my guests… you guys are absolute rock stars and I can’t thank you enough for your love and support!

Pics above taken by the oh so talented, Evan Davies and a video recap down below shot by Clark Bishop (my new fave videographer) displayed all the right vibes taken place that day.  Thank you guys for always killing it when it comes to media production!

My sincerest thanks to all my vendors and crew, The Waffle Way, DJ Brandon Jarbo and Maison Farola and of course to the staff of Delmar.  Especially, Ashley, Steven and Anthony!

Looking forward to building upon this and offering everyone more unique and fun parties where it’s not just about networking but also about having a blast!!

See you all at series 2… coming soon! 😉

I’m so excited to talk to you all about a newer, healthier way I have decided to tackle one of my daily habits.  You may not realize it, but from the time that we wake up to the time we go to bed, there are dozens of unhealthy things we do on a natural rotation that have now become a subconscious routine for us!  For me, brushing my teeth twice if not three times a day is a must, with floss at least once a day.  Not that this is something the rest of the world doesn’t do, or even something that is considered unhealthy but question is, what are we using to take care of this task??  I personally have been using Crest w/scope toothpaste for longer than I can remember, until recently when my dentist told me she was noticing a loss in enamel on my teeth.  Let’s be honest guys… if you follow my insta then you very well know that my eating habits are not always the greatest.   I do my very best to keep a balance throughout the week of eating healthy meals but I often indulge over the weekends, including drinking soda!  Needless to say… these kinds of foods and drinks can definitely effect your teeth especially when it comes to stains.  I recently got in touch with one of my friends who owns a company called Terra & Co.  Her company offers an array of products that focus on your everyday oral care.  I was so interested in knowing what other options are out there besides anything we commonly know.  She told me how activated charcoal does wonders for your teeth and gums.  So, I started doing some research!  I came across so much information that had me convinced to try this.  I started using the charcoal toothpaste a few weeks ago and can’t believe the difference I started seeing from day 1.  And let me preface this by saying….  I will never endorse anything that I do not use or believe in myself.  That’s probably a big reason why you don’t see me promote too many things besides my taste in fashion on my page 😉 😉

But back to the toothpaste!  A little bit goes a long way guys.  I will be sure to add some video tutorials to my insta stories showing how much paste I use along with the amount of floss needed for each use.  Speaking of floss… here is what I like about the Terra and Co. floss; Not only is it biodegradable with activated charcoal in its compostable packaging, but it truly works like a charm.  I don’t have a lot of wide gaps in my teeth so to get a tight squeeze in can be difficult with regular floss especially satin finished ones.  The brilliant black dental floss they offer does not fray while using at all and will not break no matter how much you pull.  This is really important while flossing to ensure proper food particle removal.

A while back I started using smile brilliant teeth whitening kits which I still use every now and then for an extra jolt, but for everyday use, I strongly recommend this paste and floss.  Next on my list will be to try their brilliant black oil pulling blend.  I have read so many positive reviews from people who go into specific benefits of toxin removal through the process of oil pulling!  Will keep you guys posted on that as well.

Be sure to check out their site linked below and give some of their products a try!  You will love the clean and brightness the charcoal toothpaste leaves behind and will be very pleased with your overall oral care.  A couple of tips to help with your process:

I always make sure to keep a damp piece of paper towel by me when brushing in case any of the charcoal slightly splatters.  It has never once stained my sink in any way but I I will get some light splashes on the wall every now and then.  No need for too much paste either.  One small line across the brush will do the trick!  I have a separate tongue scraper I use as it’s never a good idea to use your brush on your tongue.  Also, about a half a foot of floss will be enough to use for all your teeth so no need for excess.   Hope this helps!

Please message me if you have any other questions!  I’m happy to give you more specifics 🙂

This trend is everywhere! Decorative hair pieces are making a huge comeback. There are so many different ways to wear them and accessorize your summer look. You can see, the six large-sized pearl pieces give my outfit a dramatic effect! I put four toward the top and two at the bottom of my curls — anything goes with this look. Check out the links below to get some of my same pieces. Have fun with this one, as the options on how to wear them are endless!

SHOP: Gum drop barrette from Mesh Detroit; Pearl hair clips from Amazon; Star rhinestone hair clip from Shein; O ring metal hair clip from Shein.

2. Head-to-Toe Neon

The year was 1992, and the trend that took over the world was neon accents. Fast forward 27 years, and we find ourselves in the same spot as then, except the vibes are now better than ever! Don’t be afraid to really explore different ways to display this trend, whether it’s through your makeup, your clothing or even your accessories. I had the most fun visiting The Beauty Club in Birmingham, where my makeup artist Cammy Cartier created this killer makeup look on me. I love how she used a fuchsia on my lids to contrast the neon green color of the dress I’m wearing. Be sure to visit this charming salon soon — every inch of it is a girlie girl’s dream!

SHOP: Bershka satin slip dress from ASOS; 10 MYO ultra bright eyeshadow from MYO Makeup.

3. Mule Sandals

Square toe, narrow toe, point toe or round toe…block heel, stiletto heel, triangle heel or flats…. mules of any sort are welcome this summer season. These sandals will be your absolute “go to” in the coming months and just a few pairs will be enough to go with every look you rock from jeans and a T-shirt, to more dressier options like skirts and dresses! I’ve listed a few of my personal favorites that have found themselves a permanent spot in my closet. Tip: Be sure to get at least one pair that will add a fun pop of color to your wardrobe along with an animal print. These two options will give you the most bang for your buck as they easily transition with most looks.

SHOP: Triple band snakeskin mules from Boohoo; Pink Regina cross mules from Topshop; Clear strap skinny heel mules from Boohoo; Square heel mules from Revolve; High heeled vinyl mule from Zara.

4. The Mini Frill Dress

Processed with VSCO with c3 presetimg_0479

Another trend that has made its way back is the baby doll dress — preferably with frilly accents! You have probably already seen many girls rocking this look and will most likely see it through the upcoming fall and winter season. These dresses look great no matter what footwear you choose. From sandals, to sneakers and even a combat boot, you will look fly as ever. Tip: Add an oversized denim jacket over your shoulders for an extra added effect! Check out the site where I purchased the dress I am wearing for a variety of styles to choose from.

SHOP: Andreya dress from Petal + Pup; Croc mini cross body bag from Nasty Gal.

5. Shield Sunglasses

Processed with VSCO with e3 presetimg_0491

Looks like the sun is finally starting to peek out which means it’s time to bust out some fab sunnies! Say goodbye to cat eye and hello to the oversized shields. Dior, Miu Miu and Gucci are just a few designers at the forefront displaying this trend on the runways, but since we are trying to stay on a budget here, check out this perfectly sleek pair I found at Zara for a much more budget-friendly price. They’re great to pair with all of your street style and beach wear!

SHOP: Mirror lens sunglasses from Zara.

6. Shell Jewelry

img_8494

You likely have some staples that are everyday pieces when it comes to the  jewelry in your wardrobe. Pieces like layered pendant necklaces, stackable rings and sleek hoops. Time to add the most recent game changer to the mix:  shells!  This trend has been around since 2018 but has skyrocketed since then, making 2019 its year to shine. The obvious choice to pair them with are boho pieces, but I suggest thinking outside of the box and wearing them with your more classic looks, like a blazer and jeans. They’re perfect to wear poolside as well with a cute swimsuit and cover up! I went with gold and natural pieces, but have some fun and look into the multicolored options as well.

SHOP: Jovono gold shell choker necklace from Amazon; Softones beach shell bracelet from Amazon; Valloey shell bracelet from Amazon; Mallorca seashell bracelet from BaubleBar.

How to Slay 6 Summer Trends

It could be that I am in a mood to expose myself more or maybe just feeling his presence so much due to the amount of exposure from Bo-Rhap these days, but I really wanted to write about my favorite rock band and front man of all time.  A band that has frequently gotten me through many stages of my life with their music.

I’ve been a fan of QUEEN for longer than I can remember, but my obsession is on another level when it comes directly to Freddie Mercury…  (specifically, 70’s Freddie!)

I think that when I initially started this blog, my point was to ultimately showcase my fashion and sense of style, but as time goes on, the writing aspect has proven to become such an outlet for my thoughts and emotions.

Truth be told, I am a multifaceted individual.  What you see on the surface is just a glimpse and often doesn’t cover even an inch of my life.  I know that when people see glamorous pics and nice clothes, they perceive you to be a certain way.  They don’t see the hard work, the struggles, the sad times or even the other characteristics that make up who you truly are.  I hope to share so much more with all of you that make me who I truly am.  I’m sure you’ll be in for some surprises and will come to enjoy the more corky side of me 😉

I am however blessed with an army of people that do know me incredibly well.  People with whom there are no secrets or shaded areas.  People that know my bones.  They know the girl who lives in sweats, cooks for a hobby, laughs at just about everything until she can’t breathe and listens to all genres of music for therapeutic rejuvenation!  The girl that sees everything in life as beautiful art and appreciates even the tiniest things that God has blessed her with.   I don’t know how I got so lucky?  Even at my hardest times, and believe me, there have plenty, I find that God brings me so much light and love in various forms to get me through everything just fine.

Queen music being one of them!

I won’t write too many ins and outs of what I feel is my inner connection with Freddie, but what I will say is this.  You don’t have to know someone, be in a relationship with them, have a sexual attraction to them or even share a moment within a lifetime to feel as though this person existed to help you in some form.  So many times come to mind when finding out more about his life made other areas of mine make total sense. Similarities and distinctions that are truly mind blowing at times, down to his most famous characteristics (i.e. his teeth.)

A time that sticks out more so than ever was when I made the decision to leave my marriage.  I had known and been connected to my ex for nearly 10 years (total) and at that point, as you can imagine, the separation was tough but strongly needed.  I remember so many times being at home and just losing myself in Queen music.  Whether it was while I was cleaning, reading, or when I would just lay in bed and close my eyes not wanting to think about anything.

My all time favorite Queen song is “In the lap of the Gods.” Once performed at Hammersmith Odeon in London back in the 70’s, this live performance brought me to tears when I first watched it!  The song was written by Freddie so the lyrics of coarse stick out to me in an immense way.  I must have played it hundreds of times when I was going through that period in my life.  Hearing the song the way he sung it at this particular concert is something I can’t even put into words.  Not like I was there, but watching the videos and hearing his voice closely has always proven to be a chilling experience.  I uploaded the video below from Youtube if you care to watch.

Since my brother and I share in the intrigue that is Freddie Mercury, we both strongly agree that so much of Queens music actually sounded better live than it did recorded.  If I had to choose another favorite, I would definitely go with ‘Killer Queen.”  A song about a high-class call girl which was one of their first and most influential, trademarking a style of music that no one has ever been able to replicate. But lets be honest… My list of faves is endless all the way back from their first album “Queen” to their last albums “Innuendo/Made in Heaven.”

I appreciate what the other band members brought to the table so very much but there is just such a weird and special admiration for Freddie.  Not that I can’t watch Brian May effortlessly play the guitar all day. Actually, I will admit to you that I have watched countless documentaries and interviews of them for hours on end.  And, it never gets old!  I’m convinced that there will never be a point where I can say I know everything about him or them as a group.  Freddie’s life was the most intriguing of anyone I’ve ever come to learn about.  Whenever I am asked who the one person is that I would love to meet when I die, my answer has always been… “It’s a tie between Freddie and Coco!” 😉

Side note:  I have a serious thing for mens hands lol.  It is by far my favorite feature on them and what I look for first LOL. Needless to say… his hands are EVERYTHING!  Close ups of him playing the piano or the guitar is something I could stare at allllllll day!   I uploaded another video of one of my favorite interviews of them and if you skip to 2:22 in, you will see that the camera man agrees with me lol!

I think that rock music has had the biggest influence on my style as well.   I’ve never been a simple or clean line dresser.  My style has always been rocker chic and edgy.  It’s what I relate to most and honestly feel the best version of myself in.   Just another example of how areas of your life seem to always tie together.

Since there has been so much buzz surrounding Queen due to the release of Bohemian Rhapsody, I thought I would weigh in on how I felt after I watched it.  Oddly enough, it took me as long as the movie to be released on dvd for me to watch it.  Part of that was because the timing to go watch it in theaters was never worked out and also I think there was a part of me that was a little nervous to watch it because I was worried about how they would depict everything.  Pleasantly, I wasn’t too disappointed.  I didn’t love the fact that they barely touched the surface when it came to his real life and even the way the band truly did things, but to hear Queen’s music in any capacity is always a real treat so I did rather enjoy it.  Rami getting the Oscar for the role was also well deserved. Freddie Mercury was on every level, a one of a kind human being, so to come even close to portraying him deserves all the awards in the world!  I also love the fact that this generation can be introduced to them and feel their own type of way when hearing Queen music for the first time.  My 10 year old nephew is already such a big fan of “Under Pressure” just from hearing it in the movie “SING” lol!   Aside from the movie though, be sure to check out real life documentaries on Freddie and the band. They will give you a truer depiction and the more factual side of things…  From his Parsi roots, to his unique vocal range to the people he adored (i.e. Mary Austin,) you will see what a wonder of amazement he really was.  Maybe he will captivate you the same way he did me 😉

Well guys… I don’t know if this was at all interesting for you to read, but writing it was incredible!  I jammed to Queen the entire time 😉

With Valentine’s Day around the corner, I wanted to give you all a guide on how to celebrate the occasion! Whether your plans are being spent with a significant other, a new crush or even just your best girlfriends, check out my top choices on where to make plans and, of course, what to wear while out!

If you find yourself truly, madly and deeply in love during Valentine’s Day then I say “Go big, or go home!” Valentine’s Day was created for this type of indulgence, and your night should fall nothing short of that. I’ve spent most of my life exploring different pockets of Detroit and couldn’t be more proud of our beautiful city these days. As you can imagine, it wasn’t an easy choice to make when it came to choosing an upscale and beautiful restaurant that serves food as elegant as its surroundings. After having dinner at Besa about a month ago I truly fell in love! Not only is it one of Detroit’s newest premiere restaurants, but it also offers one of the most creative menus I have ever seen. Many of the items are considered small plates, so I advise you to order quite a bit. My recommendations for plates you must try are the Prawn Ceviche, Ramen Noodle Raviolo and the Holstein Ribeye. This is a time to splurge! I prefer the upstairs dining area, as it gives you views of the lit streets, but rest assured, the downstairs dining area is just as charming.

img_2404

After having such a decadent and romantic meal, there’s no better place to head to than The Royce! Yet another Detroit gem that offers the perfect intimate setting for after-dinner cocktails. From the decor to the abundance of wine selections, you’ll keep the vibes of the night going strong.

img_2430

Since the theme of the night revolves around going all out, this is a perfect time to dress to the nines! In the spirit of the signature color V-Day represents, naturally I would advise going with a true red colored dress. While others call it corny, I call it classic! The one I’m wearing is from Topshop and is linked below. Add some fun accessories to really make the entire look pop!

SHOP THE LOOK: Topshop snake effect knot midi dress, $56.99, Nordstrom; ASOS Design criss cross hair clip, $7.50, ASOS (shop similar); Gucci clutch (shop similar); Vajze jewelry; Christian Louboutin So Kate patent leather pumps, $725, Barney’s New York.

CRUSHING ON YOU.

img_2396

One of the best parts of a relationship is when it’s new — when you’re still on edge about every date, paying close attention to the details of your outfit, wondering what fun and exciting place you’re going to be taken to. It’s a time when the two of you are probably on a constant run of hotspots, having the best of times! For dates like this, I always suggest a half-and-half deal. Have dinner somewhere with ultra cool social vibes and after-dinner cocktails in a more intimate place. It was a no-brainer for me to choose Wright and Co. for my dinner suggestion. Not only are you guaranteed to have a great meal, but the vibes give off everything Detroit stands for. This place is a forever favorite of mine, and I could surely eat their potato chip dish and scallops daily!

f5e696f5-eb06-4f21-8eda-d3655b64bf07

After dinner is the best time to walk a couple blocks to one of the coolest bars in all the land, Bad Luck Bar! Feeling like you are part of a secret society while entering this place from an alley will surely add to the excitement of the night. The bar is smaller so you two can have some personal time and easily carry on your “get to know one another convo.” Be sure to order cocktail No. 9 off the menu which will be like nothing you’ve ever drunk before, pop rocks and all.

img_2402

You can never go wrong with a cute top, sleek pants and some mega sexy heels, so check out this look I put together for inspo!

SHOP THE LOOK: Self-Portrait printed frill top, $231, fwrd.com; Takara front zippered pocket pull-on pants, $34, Dillard’s; Lele Sadoughi crystal lily earrings, $198, fwrd.com; Francina ring, $50, and Donika ring, $68, both from Vajze; Christian Louboutin Iriza patent open-side red sole pump, $695, Neiman Marcus.

“WHERE MY GIRLS AT?”

img_2412

What a time to be alive, am I right? We have finally entered an era where singles are being celebrated just as much as those who are coupled up! Being a happily single gal myself, this is my favorite segment! I’ve hosted events throughout the city for different types of occasions, but when it comes to events revolved around my girls, I automatically head to another top on my list, Parc. I couldn’t be more obsessed with their private dining area and think it’s perfect for planning a big Galentine’s night out! If you follow me, then you know how big of a foodie I am, and Parc is one of the few places where I can order anything and leave fully satisfied! One dish that is my particular favorite is the King Crab Tagliatelle. If you get a chance, be sure to request executive chef Joshua Cross to tell you all about how this wonderful meal is created!

img_2409

After leaving dinner, full of delicious food and laughs, the next stop is…Standby! Located on one end of the Belt, you will enter down stairs to a cool space where the music is always on fire and the cocktails are crafted to perfection. Getting a corner booth while vibing out to the best jams is the perfect way to spend the rest of your Galentine’s night! Check out their site for information on what they are planning to host that night!

img_2400

My go-to look has always been rocker chic, so a metallic blazer with cropped jeans is the perfect choice!

SHOP THE LOOK: ASOS Design blazer in metallic, $47.50, ASOS (shop similar); Z1975 skinny jeans with zip vents, $39.90, Zara; Steven Madden metallic pumps (shop similar); Chanel cross body bag (shop similar); Francina ring, $50, and Donika ring, $68, both from Vajze.
